April 2025

This is the first issue of Aux Return a slow, deliberate signal from my acoustic recording world.

I’ve been curious lately about how venue acoustics are being tracked and documented. Turns out, there are some very serious players in this space, mostly aimed at touring engineers and system designers.

L’Acoustic Sound Vision Database ->

– Acoustic data files for spaces around the world.

Meyer Sound Venue Templates

– Used with MAPP 3D for immersive room prediction.

JBL Venue Synthesis

– Includes SPL mapping and delay spread analysis.

Myriad Room Acoustic Database

 – Academic-grade multichannel acoustic profiles for research.

While these aren’t exactly open-source playgrounds, they hint at the importance of venue-specific sound design. I’m exploring ways of referencing or weaving these updates into future newsletters, maybe just a highlight here and there. If you’d find that useful, let me know.

Why I Love the Acoustic Guitar – Sound on Sound

This piece nails it. It reminded me that every time I mic up an acoustic, I’m not capturing tone, I’m capturing intention. The guitar isn’t the star. The moment is.

“With its unique voice and rich timbre, the acoustic guitar in the hands of a creative mind has unlimited possibilities.”

“Nothing is Beautiful”

A recording I shaped from an acoustic session. The idea was to keep it feeling momentary, just recorded, despite taking weeks to plan.

On the Bench

Someone asked what mic I’d use for an upright piano. Honestly? The one I trust in the room that day.

Placement matters more than price. If you’re into mic philosophy, contact me on Instagram - jwaudio_247. I love talking about it.

Final Word

If any of this resonated, I’d love to hear from you. And if you think someone else might appreciate it — forward this on.
